Mandarin
Did you know that China has the largest population in the
world with over 1.3 billion people? In Stage 3, we’re learning all about the
People’s Republic of China which goes nicely with learning Mandarin. All
students from Kindergarten to Year 6 participate in weekly Mandarin lessons
with Lǎoshī Mary. One of the TV Channels in China
heard about how well we are doing and came to film the class making dumplings.
We had some special helpers and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of making
them as well as eating them!

From the Garden
We are very fortunate to have our own vegetable garden and chickens at Brookvale and we love using fresh produce in our cooking. We sell eggs and bunches vegetables when possible and it certainly is fresh!!
Jump Rope Jump Off Day!
What a fantastic day we all had with our Jump Off for Jump Rope for Heart. The school made over $5000 to donate to the Heart Foundation. A mammoth effort! Well done to everyone who contributed. The whole school got behind the jump off and dressed in our red mufti, each class had a 1/2 hour timeslot spent continuously jumping at the front of the school with the music going. At the end of the day, we all came together to skip and you could tell that EVERY student in the school had improved since we started.

Jump Rope for Heart
BPS were lucky enough to have a visit from Middle Harbour PS Whipper Skippers. They were fantastic! They practice every Thursday morning for an hour before school as well as some lunch times.
We thought they were brilliant! Keep skipping BPS! |

We are having a ball with the skipping ropes! You can't walk through the playground without dodging skipping ropes! It's so lovely to see so many students, of all ages, SKIPPING! What a great way to have fun with your friends and to get fit!
Pyjama Day
Brookvale held their first Pyjama Day on Tuesday 29th July. Almost everyone turned up in their Pyjamas and there were some interesting Onesies! Everybody brought in their gold coin as a donation to raise money for Foster Children. So many people had fun wearing and showing off their Pyjamas and it was a great day. Everyone wearing their Pyjamas was given a sticker that said, “I Love Pyjamas!!”. Even the teachers got involved!!! It was a great day to raise money for a really important cause. The total money raised was $195! Well done and thank you for your participation.

Mindfulness
We LOVE to practise Mindfulness in 5/6S! It is an effective way to reduce stress, increase self-awareness, enhance emotional intelligence and it also assists in handling your thoughts and feelings. At the moment we are using the smiling minds website to complete our mindfulness sessions and for some of us, it's tricky but we are getting better!
We use the Smiling Mind Website - they also have an app!

Preschool Visits
Beacon Hill Kindy
Kabir, Nathan, Annysa and Lucy all went up to Beacon Hill to interact with the Kindy students. They had a great time playing games, working on puzzles, painting, reading and building with the blocks and lego. They all showed their best manners and represented the school with pride.

Making a Difference - Narraweena
Giulia, Zach, Holly and Vivian visited ‘Making a Difference’ Preschool at Narraweena on Tuesday 22nd July. When we first got there we introduced ourselves to some of the children and played with them in their outside playground area. We then read to the children who wanted to hear a story. I know we all enjoyed reading to them as we all got through many books and read until we had to leave! It also helped our leadership skills as we communicated quickly and easily to them and we were asking them lots of questions about the books we were reading. We all had such a fun time and hope they had fun too.

Extension Studies - Balgowlah Boys High School
What a great semester we had at extension studies!!! Every Wednesday Zach, Nathan and I went to Balgowlah Boys High School to learn (but mostly had fun) at Extension Studies. We learnt about creative
arts, drama, science, created our own monster and we even played (learnt) with Lego. We had two excursions which were to Taronga Zoo and Luna Park.
One of my favourite activities was solving a murder case. We had to examine the ransom note, match a shoe print and work out which stamp is the one used to send the ransom note. Also my favourite moment was when we went to Luna Park. It was fun to go on all the rides and learn about physics. We were the first group who didn’t vomit on the day.
Overall we had so much fun and wish we could go again. WE HAD SO MUCH FUN!

Our Chickens have NAMES!
We have finally named the chickens! All the chicken wranglers had a meeting at lunchtime, and then we went through the list of names and took a vote. The biggest black one’s name is King Licorish, the medium black one is Pepper, and the smallest black one is Toes! The darker brown one is Flecks and the other brown one is called is Honey! The white we named…………Marshmallow! We are trying to get the chickens a new home with more grass somewhere around the school but, we are still looking.
Anybody for Eggs?
The chickens have started laying eggs! When I first picked one up, it was still warm and we have a total of three eggs so far! We don’t know which chickens laid the eggs but once they all start laying we’ll have a lot of eggs! If you have any spare egg cartons, please send them in to Miss Surrest.
The chickens have a nice fenced off place the live now and a special area to lay their eggs. We might let them out in to the area with the fruit trees so they can eat all the weeds there. I think they’ll like that!
Every day we still come and feed them food pellets and fruit and vegetable scraps. When they see us coming, they squish up against the fence, waiting for food. The chickens are a lot bigger now so they
need a lot more food!
It has been very exciting having the chickens laying eggs already. We hope there will be more eggs
soon!
This is Kayleen on behalf of all the Chicken Wranglers. Stay tuned for more chicken news!

Knitting Club
Every Tuesday at lunch time in the Library, a very enthusiastic group of students (Kindergarten to Year 6) enjoy knitting with Miss Surrest, Mrs Richardson and Mrs Staniforth. We often have parents and grandparents come in to help. A lot of the younger students either finger knit or French knit, while most of the older students use knitting needles.
We have had knitting donated from grandparents, aunties, friends, teachers and students. So far we have covered 3 trees! We are hoping to get enough to cover all the trees out the front of our school! Can you knit?
