2014 - Term 1: Design, Make, Innovate (DMI)
Stage 3 is taking part in a DMI (Design, Make and Innovate) project in conjunction with Balgowlah Boys High School and Mackellar Girls High School. In this project, they will design, collect materials and construct a toy that can be used by 10 year old children. This will involve two half days and a full day of construction. Students will be cutting, sawing, screwing, chopping, sticking and general construction. We’d love to have some dads (or mums) along to help if you can spare the time. Last year was a great success and we are hoping, with some parental help, this year might be even better!
Half days are 9am-12pm on: Monday 10th and Wednesday 12th March
The full day is 9am-3pm on: Monday 17th March

Engineering our own Bridges! What a treat! Ms Thomson helped us engineer our own bridges today. We could work by ourselves or in small groups. First we designed our bridge and thought about what equipment we would use. Then we got cracking on making them! The brief was that they had to be able to hold a stapler.
Check out the end results! Aren't we clever? |
ElectricityWhat a fun topic! We have made circuits using a globe, batteries and wires and even went on to add a paper clip switch. It was so exciting when the light came on. Great team work!

Fun with Polymer Beads
Have you ever heard of Polymer beads? Mrs Maunder bought some brightly coloured Polymer beads and we were lucky enough to use them. (They’re also known as water pearls.)They start off as tiny little hard beads that are coloured. We then put them in some water over night and when we came back to school, they had grown so much they were now 150 times their original size! How amazing!
They are odourless and non-toxic and can be used in vases to keep plants alive. You need to top up the water every so often, but they last for a few years. Once they have been hydrated, they feel slippery and slimy. The colours are so bright and look great in the glass vases we have put them in. |
