Welcome Back!! This term is going to be a busy one! Today term invoices, notes and the Stage 3 Overview went home. It is important that all students have the correct equipment at school so that they can learn (pencil cases stocked). Summer uniforms are looking very smart and it's great to see so many students with crunch and sip at school! I'm excited for a fantastic last term of 2014.
What a fantastic day we all had with our Jump Off for Jump Rope for Heart. The school made over $5000 to donate to the Heart Foundation. A mammoth effort! Well done to everyone who contributed. The whole school got behind the jump off and dressed in our red mufti, each class had a 1/2 hour timeslot spent continuously jumping at the front of the school with the music going. At the end of the day, we all came together to skip and you could tell that EVERY student in the school had improved since we started.
CONGRATULATIONS Brookvale Public School! To see the pictures and videos - click here or visit our Extra Activities page. What a fantastic day of interesting and challenging maths problems that we all needed to solve! It was wonderful to see enthusiasm and teamwork as everyone worked together to solve the different maths tasks.
Today we had a visit from Middle Harbour Whipper Skippers and boy were they fantastic! What a wonderful performance they put on! If we keep practising, we might be as good as them! Click here to see some footage...
We had another visit from Nicola today from the Heart Foundation. She taught us how to do lots of different tricks with the skipping ropes. How many of these can you do?
We have started Jump Rope for Heart! Today, Mitch and Nicola came to school to tell us all about Jump Rope for Heart. There are a lot of prizes we can win by collecting sponserships and then skipping. This will help raise much needed funds for people with heart disease.
All forms that go home today must be returned to school before the 'Jump Off' date (Friday 12th September) with the money you have raised. You can also fill out your sponsorship online which is easier and there are additional prizes that you can win, only by completing it online! So... click, flick and skip! "Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart is all about teaching Aussie kids how to keep fit and healthy. It improves their strength and confidence in physical activities and builds healthy bones and muscles. Students can have lots of fun with their class mates and play lots of skipping games too. At the same time they will be helping save Australian lives by asking their family and friends to sponsor them for being a part of this fun program. Funds raised go towards research to help the fight against heart disease and stroke." Heart Foundation website. Brookvale held their first Pyjama Day on Tuesday 29th July. Almost everyone
turned up in their Pyjamas and there were some interesting Onesies! Everybody brought in their gold coin as a donation to raise money for Foster Children. So many people had fun wearing and showing off their Pyjamas and it was a great day. Everyone wearing their Pyjamas was given a sticker that said, “I Love Pyjamas!!”. Even the teachers got involved!!! It was a great day to raise money for a really important cause. The total money raised was $195! Well done and thank you for your participation. Kayleen Community Care and Charity Leader CHECK OUT THE PHOTOS ON OUR EXTRA ACTIVITIES PAGE OR CLICK HERE! We LOVE to practise Mindfulness in 5/6S! It is an effective way to reduce stress, increase self-awareness, enhance emotional intelligence and it also assists in handling your thoughts and feelings. At the moment we are using the smiling minds website to complete our mindfulness sessions and for some of us, it's tricky but we are getting better!
For a link to the website and to see some photos of us meditating, click here! Today, Giulia, Zach, Holly and Vivian visited ‘Making a Difference’ Preschool at Narraweena. When we first got there we introduced ourselves to some of the children and played with them in their outside playground area. We then read to the children who wanted to hear a story. I know we all enjoyed reading to them as we all got through many books and read until we had to leave! It also helped our leadership skills as we communicated quickly and easily to them and we were asking them lots of questions about the books we were reading. We all had such a fun time and hope they had fun too. Giulia We had a very busy assembly today with the Athletics Carnival awards and class awards handed out. It looks like 5/6S is full of athletes! Well done those students who received a ribbon or an award this week. Keep up the great work!
Gymnastics started today and everyone had a great time! Keep working on your strength and flexibility 5/6S! Click here to see the photos!
Welcome back to school! Term 3 has started well and everyone is very settled which is great to see! It sounds like you all had a lovely break and we're now back in to working hard.
A few things to remember:
Congratulations to our Gold, Silver and Bronze Award winners for Term 2! You worked hard to receive your respect, responsiblity and personal best mini merits and you are fantastic leaders! Well done Kayleen, Giulia and Primrose!
Joel, Zach and Nathan have finished their semester at Balgowlah Boys Extension Studies. To find out about what they did, visit our Extra Activities page.
What a fabulous day we had at C.A.R.E.S today! Although it was very cold, everyone stayed warm by riding bikes around the challenge course and then on the mini road. Students were concentrating on their balance, indicating, scanning the road, turning corners and how to negotiate riding their bikes on the road safely.
Congratulations to those students who managed to keep all of their points on their license! Visit the Excursions page (by clicking through the tabs at the top) to see the photos. I'm sure you will all agree that the Art Show was an absolute success! I have only heard positve comments, and rightly so too. It was a fantastic night with lovely food put on by Mrs de Graaf's parents (thank you very much), entertainment by Kayleen and Giulia (well done girls on a fabulous performance) and brilliant art by your children! If you couldn't make it and you would like to purchase your child's artwork (which I highly recommend) then please pop in to the office this week. If you can't make it in, then send the money in to school in an envelope and your child can bring their work home. $5 each item and most children have 3!
We have had a very hard working team of teachers and friends of the community setting up for tomorrow's Art Show! Thank you to the wonderful helpers! See you all there! I LOVE getting snail mail! Getting letters in the post is something that I will never stop loving. Yesterday, I received a lovely envelope and inside there were two letters and two postcards. I was thrilled to read them as they were from two former students, Ebony-Ella and Jewell. What a lovely surprise! You can read their letters/postcards bellow. (You will need to click on the PDF file to read the letters) Thank you girls! You made my week!
Are your speakers turned on? The song playing is the official World Cup Song! World Cup Fever has hit 5/6S! Have you seen our display out the front of the classroom? Come and check it out!
Everyone has a team they are following (drawn out of a hat) and they are responsible for putting up the scores each day. We are also doing a mini contract on the World Cup (why not when it only happens once every 4 years) and this is due at the end of the first week back to school. It's a bit of fun but everyone is expected to have a go thank you. We all wish Australia the best of luck! There will be some weary eyes for the next month I'm sure (including myself) as we get up early to support Australia and other teams we may be following. Head on over to our PDHPE page (under the Learning Areas tab) to follow what we get up to in class! 5/6S, this is where you can find the instructions to fold your group booklet! Click here Today, the whole school watched an Aboriginal Performance by a man named Tjupurru. He played an instrument called the Didjeribone, a mixture of the Didgeridoo and the Trombone. While playing the Didjeribone he was wearing a Face Bass which is a sensor picking up the vibration of his moving mouth. He played a lot of his songs and Year 6 got to do the limbo with some of the teachers! We all had a lot of fun and we all wish that he will come back next year! Check him out at: www.tjupurru.com Primrose Come and see our fantastic art work!! Next Saturday, 21st June, BPS are holding an Art Exhibition at the 'If U Like Art' studio in Brookvale. It is going to be a fantastic evening so please come along and support your child and the school. The exhibition is from 5:30pm-7:30pm and refreshments will be supplied. Although this is a free event, we ask that you please make a donation on the door. It's important that you RSVP so we can ensure there will be enough food and drinks!
This will be a fantastic opportunity to see your child's art work and you will have the chance to purchase it as well as the class art work! They are all looking fantastic so come along and support the school and your child. Hold your horses everyone! It’s time for 5/6S to show you what we know aboutidioms. This is going to be a piece of cake! Idioms are everywhere in the English language. They have become integrated in everyday speech across all walks of life. We often don’t notice them! 5/6S have 3 plays to share with you that all have different themed idioms in them. The first play is called “Mr Becker Gets the Ball Rolling” and has a lot of sports and games idioms. Have you ever heard of blow by blow? Or in the ballpark? The second play we have for you is called “A Rock ‘n’ Roll Brainstorm” and features idioms related to school and education. Keep your ears out for idioms such as‘make the grade’, ‘brainstorm’ and ‘do the maths’. Our third play is titled “Worms Make My Skin Crawl!” and makes reference to body idioms such as make your skin crawl and two people might be joined at the hip. Thank you for watching! We hope you managed to pick up on some of the idioms we used! |
Miss SurrestTeaching is my passion! My mum, dad and stepdad are all teachers along with so many of our family friends so I think that it's in my blood.
I was brought up on Sydney's Northern Beaches and absolutely love teaching at Brookvale Public School. I teach Stage 3 (Years 5 & 6) and my class is amazing. They are funny, always willing to learn, adventurous and enthusiastic. Enjoy following our path and seeing what we get up to in 5/6S. Archives
